Son histoire
Filmed in Port Cros, France and Japan. When I was on the island in the south of France, its landscape and WWII vestiges somehow reminded me of Japan, especially the stories of my mother who lived through the war.
Laudomia
Filmed in the Archives départementales du Gard. It is an amazing place and there are so many stories conserved there, some of which are hundreds of years old. At the same time the new building of the archives had a science fiction-like atmosphere and looked like a bomb shelter. That was the beginning of my story-making and Laudomia is a city in the book “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino.
Facade
This was filmed at the École Nationale de Police de Nîmes. It looks like somebody’s hideout but actually it’s just a set to train the police cadets. So it’s real but not real. I wanted to question the border of fiction and reality, if any.
Find my place
There is a famous train line in Tokyo called the Yamanote-line. It’s a circular line so there’s no beginning or end. You move but you come back to the same station eventually. The voices were recorded in Brussels, all foreigners who were staying there and looking for their own place in a new city.
Around me 2
I was standing under a mirrored installation that was designed by Norman Foster at the old port of Marseille, filming the reflection of the ceiling. It was interesting to see how people moved around me from different points of view. I’m an obstacle for them and an observer at the same time.
